Title: Hydro-ecological monitoring of heavy metal pollution of water bodies in the Western Bug River basin within the mining-industrial region
Authors: Попович, Василь Васильович; Скробала, Віктор Михайлович; Тиндик, Олег Стефанович; Каспрук, Олеся Ігорівна
Abstract: Purpose. This research aims to explore the peculiarities of chemical pollution with heavy metals of water in rivers and
water bodies in the Chervonohrad mining-industrial region depending on the distance to the source of pollution and the type of
landscape, as well as to analyze the general trends in the seasonal dynamics of chemical element concentration.
Methods. The paper uses statistical processing of the chemical pollution parameters of water and soil, such as correlation
analysis and Data Mining methods. The similarity of ecotopes and grouping of chemical elements is assessed using cluster
analysis. Multidimensional spatial ordination of ecotopes is described using geochemical indicators and graphical visualization
based on Principle Component Analysis.
Findings. The highest level of pollution during the entire monitoring season was observed in water bodies at the foot of the
Mezhyrichanska Mine waste heap near the city of Chervonohrad. Among the river bodies, the worst water condition in terms
of heavy metal pollution was found in the Rata River (Silets village), which is located in the zone of influence of mining enterprises. The maximum excess of heavy metal content in water in seasonal dynamics in all sites is characterized by April variant
of water samples. The analysis of the dependence between the concentrations of chemical elements indicates the presence of a
close relationship between many parameters.
Originality. For the first time, it has been found that the multidimensional ordination of water bodies on the axes of complex geochemical gradients of the environment reflects the seasonal dynamics of the pollution level of natural water bodies
with heavy metals within the mining-industrial region.
Practical implications. Based on the data obtained on the heavy metal content in water of natural water bodies, it is possible to predict the pollution level and implement measures to prevent the impact of negative factors on water quality. Knowing
the geochemical conditions of ecotopes in a certain period of time, it is possible to determine their position in the ecological
space on complex gradients of the medium, to predict the stability and possible changes in vegetation, fauna and microflora
due to environmental pollution.

Abstract: Samples of edaphotopes were taken from a depth of 0–15 cm for analyses in this study. It was found that the water in the areas of the Hnidavske swamp and Teremniv ponds was the most polluted. The level of Zn (0.01 mg/dm3) exceeded the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) at site 5 (Lypnyany village, outside the city of Lutsk, the content was 0.015 mg/dm3) and Hnidavske marsh (0.019 mg/dm3). At all study sites, Cr (0.001 mg/dm3) ranging from 0.002 to 0.005 mg/dm3, Co (0.005 mg/dm3) from 0.008 to 0.01 mg/dm3, and Ni (0.01 mg/dm3) from 0.02 to 0.036 mg/dm3 were also found to exceed the MPC. However, Cd levels (0.005 mg/dm3) did not exceed the MPC and was within the normal range at all study sites (0.0016–0.003 mg/dm3).

Abstract: The research focuses on studying the geotechnical stability of backfill mass in the mined-out spaces of inactive quarries for restoring the earth’s surface in the conditions of the Kryvyi Rih region, where large-scale complex iron ore mining is conducted. Based on the analysis, it has been determined that in the region, to fill inactive quarry cavities and failure zones, the traditional method of filling them with dump waste rock is used. Given that the city of Kryvyi Rih is a densely populated, highly indutrialised agglomeration, the restoration of additional land areas could bring significant benefits for the economic development of the region, but the rock mass is not able to provide reliable geomechanical stability of the earth’s surface. The transformation of the physical state of the backfill mass from a loose to a monolithic state is proposed. In order to select alternative backfill methods, the quantitative and qualitative structure of the accumulated wastes of the mining-metallurgical complex that can be used as backfill materials is analyzed. Taking into account the significant volumes of accumulated beneficiation tailings and their limited utilization, it is recommended to use them as part of cemented paste backfilling, which will lead to an improvement in the environmental situation. The research methodology consists of laboratory tests of physical-mechanical properties of dump hard rocks, analysis of the properties of paste backfilling, and numerical modeling of stability of various types of backfill masses. It has been found that the mixture of rocks of 0...100 mm in terms of bulk density and voidness is close to the minimum fraction of 0...5 mm, which does not require the need to select a certain fractional composition. A «stress-strain» curve of a 0...100 mm rock mixture with a logarithmic relationship, characterized by three stages of strain, has been plotted. The strain modulus value has been calculated. The similarity of the mechanical characteristics of the studied mixture to the full-scale characteristics of dump hard rocks is substantiated. The modeling results show that the maximum strains in the case of rock backfilling reach 780 mm, while the calculations of paste backfilling show a significant decrease in the subsidence value, reaching only 43 mm. The difference in the values of subsidence is due to a significant difference in physical-mechanical properties. Based on studying the hardening conditions of paste backfill mixtures and temperature dynamics in the region, a seasonal approach and the formation of a combined backfill mass are proposed to maintain the reclamation rate. The research findings are valuable for the development of the construction direction of reclamation in the Kryvyi Rih region and the rational use of restored land areas.
